Southwest Textile Database Project
We have developed an illustrated website that showcases over 1,200 Southwestern handwoven blankets from over fifty American public museums. Launched in 2022, the website features a splendid array of Pueblo, Navajo and Spanish American textiles dating from the 1750s to the early 1900s. The website is available free-of-charge to inspire and educate students, artists, weavers, researchers, curators, and members of the public who want to learn more about the American Southwest’s weaving traditions.
The information and images featured on our website were gathered by the late Dr. Joe Ben Wheat and published, in part, in his book, Blanket Weaving in the Southwest, which was compiled and edited by project director Ann Lane Hedlund. Funding provides ongoing technical support to maintain, upgrade and secure the website, including the annual software licenses with FileMaker Pro and annual web-hosting fees on a qualified FMP server, so that this valuable information and these beautiful images will remain available into the future.
